Škoda Motorsport team has been working on a new racing car which would take up the successes of the team in recent past. Škoda Fabia Super 2000 was exposed in the start and finish during Rally Bohemia and will appear at Barum Rally as a forerunner, driven by Jan Kopecký. This information has been officially confirmed at press conference in Prague by Jaroslav Černý, press spokesman of Škoda Auto, a.s. Some of the fans may be sad that they will not be able to see Jan Kopecký fighting with the IRC elite. Nevertheless, this indicates that the car may be homologated by January 1 2009.

The whole project of Fabia Super 2000 was started by exposition of a stadu at Autosalon Geneve 2007. This was followed by development of the concept and individual components which was finished by the end of 2007. This started mounting of the prototype. The first tests took place in February.

“Škoda Motorsport cooperates with department of technical development of Škoda Auto. One of the important partners is Sportech company from Italy. They help us with technical consultations. Also AV Engineering from Zlin has helped us a lot. The engine has been developed in cooperation with Oreca company from France. The electronics is supplied by Magneti Marelli, the gearbox and transmission system is from X-Trac. We also continue in cooperation with the producer of Reiger dampers. Among other partners are companies Heggemann, Pankl and Brembo,“ said the leader of Škoda Motorsport department, Michal Hrabánek.

Today, three prototypes of Škoda Fabia Super 2000 are made. On asphalt roads the car has been mostly driven by Jan Kopecký and Raimund Baumschlager. “The wheelframe is not very different from the WRC cars. However, the engine only has 1/3 torque, which is apparent. It is necessary to keep the speed at certain level or you would lose a lot. Nevertheless, thank to lesser weight of the car, you can brake a little later,“ said Kopecký.

On gravel the car was driven by experienced Finnish champion Sebastian Lindholm. The cockpit and qualities of the car was also tested in Austria by a doublefold world champion Carlos Sainz from Spain.

Škoda Fabia Super 2000 has been currently tested with a view to improvement and check on reliability of mechanically stressed components, such as engine, gearbox, transmissions or wheel mounting. After these tests, the components will be produced for use of homologation which will start in November.
